Naysa Modi, age 12, a 7th grade student at Reynolds Middle School in Frisco is famous for her recalling spellings of words. She was eliminated in the final round when she misspelled bewusstseinslage. She had to sacrifice her 1st place and had to comfortably accept the second spot at Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., on Thursday, May 31, 2018. She is sponsored by the Dallas Sports Commission. This is Modi’s fourth trip to the National Spelling Bee after tying for 50th in 2015, 46th in 2016 and 7th in 2017. Shw won a prize money of $30,000 for securing the second spot.
Naysa Modi born to Indian Origin Parents, Mr. Nayan Modi and Vaishali Modi. She has a younger brother by name Vivaan Modi. Naysa, who won the All-Parish Spelling Bee in March, was not new to the national competition. Naysa was also a media darling at the bee. During the break between the morning rounds and the ESPN prime-time finals, reporters tracked her down for interviews, including Kellie Meyer, a multimedia reporter for Gray television. Meyer interviewed her for a Monroe affiliate.
Naysa’s father, Nayan, said she was so close to making the finals last year, the family was sure she would fare well this year.
“We could see her potential,” he said. “I’m extremely proud of her.”
Modi says Naysa has support not only in the crowded ballroom but also thousands of miles away. He and his wife, Vaishali, have been updating family and friends through texts and social media.
“Everybody is watching on TV back home… in Monroe, La., and even back home in India,” he said.
And it’s the middle of the night in India, he said. “Everybody is sending their blessings,” Modi said.
And then there were some die-hard supporters. Some family friends drove all the way from New Jersey Thursday afternoon after learning she had made the finals earlier in the day.
“I was not surprised,” said Punam Gore, who traveled with her family from Princeton to support Naysa. “I was expecting that. I was expecting her to win.”
Naysa’s mom, Vaishali, said the family couldn’t be happier with her performance.
“She’s already a winner for us,” she said.
