Ruturaj Gaikwad is an Indian international cricketer and captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League, widely celebrated as one of the finest opening batsmen produced by Maharashtra and one of the brightest stars in contemporary Indian cricket. His elegant technique, composed temperament, and prolific run-scoring across all formats have made him a household name among cricket fans across India and around the world.
Early Life
Ruturaj Dashrat Gaikwad was born on 31 January 1997 into a Marathi family in Pune, Maharashtra. His father, Dasharath Gaikwad, worked with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), bringing a disciplined, service-oriented household environment that shaped Ruturaj's character and work ethic from an early age. Growing up in Pune — one of India's most prominent cricket nurseries — Ruturaj was exposed to the sport from childhood and quickly demonstrated exceptional natural talent at the batting crease. Pune's strong cricket infrastructure, including its competitive local and district-level tournaments, provided him with the ideal platform to develop his game during his formative years.
Education
Ruturaj Gaikwad completed his schooling in Pune and pursued his academic education while simultaneously dedicating himself to cricket training. He attended local schools in Pune and was identified as a standout cricket talent during his school years, eventually progressing through Maharashtra's under-age cricket pipeline. His focus on cricket meant that his academic and sporting commitments ran in parallel, a balance that many elite Indian cricketers navigate during their development years. He went on to represent Maharashtra at the under-16 and under-19 levels before graduating to senior domestic cricket.
Career
Ruturaj Gaikwad made his first-class debut for Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy, quickly establishing himself as a consistent performer in domestic cricket. His IPL career began with the Chennai Super Kings, the franchise with which he has built his reputation as one of the IPL's most reliable and explosive opening batsmen. He won the IPL Orange Cap — awarded to the leading run-scorer of the tournament — in the 2021 season, accumulating 635 runs in 16 matches, a performance that brought him widespread national recognition and cemented his place in India's international squad.
He made his international debut for India across all three formats and has become a regular fixture in the Indian national team. In the IPL, he was appointed captain of Chennai Super Kings, succeeding the legendary MS Dhoni in the captaincy role — an immense responsibility that he has embraced with maturity and composure. In 2024, he led India A and was a key part of India's domestic circuit success. His batting is characterized by exceptional timing, a wide range of strokes, and the ability to build innings patiently under pressure.
