Dr. Sarafina Nance is proof that scientists can be many things at once. An Egyptian-American astrophysicist with a PhD from UC Berkeley, she studies exploding stars and the behavior of Betelgeuse, writes viral science content for millions of social media followers, authored a critically praised memoir, and has appeared in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit — all while conducting genuine academic research. She has become one of the most beloved science communicators in the United States.
Early Life and Education
Sarafina El-Badry Nance is of Egyptian-American heritage and grew up with a deep passion for astronomy. She earned her PhD in Astrophysics at the University of California, Berkeley. Her doctoral research focused on massive stellar evolution, supernovae, and the dramatic behavior of Betelgeuse — the famous red supergiant in Orion's Belt — which captured global attention in 2019–2020 when it dimmed dramatically, sparking speculation about an imminent supernova.
Career: Research and Science Communication
After her PhD, Sarafina Nance transitioned increasingly toward full-time science communication while maintaining active research collaborations. She is a prominent figure on Instagram and X, where her posts on astrophysics, women in science, and life as a researcher with chronic illness have resonated with millions. After being diagnosed with the BRCA1 gene mutation, she underwent preventive surgery and shared her journey openly, destigmatizing women's health conversations in scientific spaces.
Starstruck: The Memoir (2023)
Starstruck: A Memoir of Astrophysics and Finding Light in the Dark (2023) interweaves her PhD journey with personal experiences of grief, chronic illness, and her BRCA1 diagnosis. Featured on NPR and praised by The Planetary Society, it is one of the most human science memoirs of recent years.
Net Worth
Sarafina Nance's estimated net worth in 2026 is approximately $500 thousand, from research income, the Starstruck book advance and royalties, speaking fees, science communication partnerships, and Sports Illustrated modeling work.
