Brian Dean’s Career:

Brain Dean earned his undergraduate degree in nutrition from the University of Rhode Island, and then his master’s degree in nutrition from Tufts. Brian Dean at a point really wanted to become a professor. But then he then entered a Ph.D. program at Purdue.

Dean hated his career as his advisor turned out to be a jerk. So, he decided to quit my Ph.D. program and got a job as a dietitian. Unfortunately, this was 2008 and the heart of the financial crisis. Getting a job was a tall task, especially for a new graduate with very little experience. But then it was The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss that got Dean started on his path to entrepreneurship.

Soon after reading Ferriss’s book, Dean began to create his first information product, an e-book about back pain. Unfortunately, he had also landed a full-time job as a dietitian, which cut into his writing time. Due to his full-time job, his e-book business struggled which made who end up hiring writers from Elance to help him create content.

He wasn’t impressed with their writing and he thought to himself, that he could totally do better than these guys. So he started writing for clients on Elance, which wasn’t the four-hour workweek lifestyle he was looking for, but it paid the bills to the point so that he could quit his job.

Dean continued to work on his “lifestyle” niche business, including creating multiple niche websites. He also took on the role of a freelancer for Livestrong, writing 12 articles per day for the fitness website.

Brain Dean quit working with his Elance clients to focus solely on writing for Livestrong and creating content for his own websites. He got into the whole ‘niche website’ craze of 2009/2010 and built over 150 websites at one point. All of them were one page exact match domains, so he initially became interested in SEO as a way to make a passive income.

At that time, these types of niche websites were set up to drive traffic to products or services and either earn referral fees or ad revenue from Google AdSense. This was a heightened era of black-hat techniques as people would generate keyword-stuffed content and create backlinks from anywhere in order to trick Google into ranking them high in search results.

While Dean wasn’t necessarily engaging in black-hat techniques, he ended up catching the blunt of it from Google, just like many webmasters during that time.

Dean had to face tough times as he started loosing traffic. His sites worked out well until Google Panda reared its ugly head in 2010. His traffic was completely wiped out overnight. After he got wiped out after Google Panda, he never evaluated why he failed. He just thought, he needs to create websites that won’t get hit by Google Panda. But, the real reason he failed was because he created crappy websites. It took  almost two years for Dean to realize that fact.

It was his experience with Panda that led him into the world of SEO, where he started his own agency. It eventually led him into creating Backlinko in 2013. The site currently generates more than 260,000 visits (155,000 unique visits) per month, half of which are returning visitors.
